The Electoral Commission of the University of Ghana SRC has released the official provisional results of the 2018 SRC elections which came off yesterday.
The elections sought to make a decision on who takes over from the Daniel Otting Awuah led administration.
Ahead of the elections, many feared that turnouts would be low, however, the total number of persons who partook in the election is considered by student activists as one of the highest in recent times.
For the Treasurer portfolio, Mr Smith Dumenyo, who went unopposed had 5,432 ‘Yes’ votes as against 341 ‘no’ votes.
Lady Cornelia Djordjormey, for the office of the General Secretary, managed to garner 3,568 votes of the total 5,882 votes cast to get the nod over her opposition, Lady Sophia Otoo, who gave her a good race. Lady Sophia had 2,314 persons voting in her favour.
For the Presidential office, many had expected Derrick Schandorf to ‘bully’ his 4 other contestants since he appeared to have more experience regarding politics in the University of Ghana, however, he managed to garner just 317 of the total 5,891 valid votes cast.
Kingsley Adu-Otchere, popularly known as Sir Kingsley, also managed to score 330 votes.
Ewura Karim Adams, who had the granddaughter of Ghana’s former Prime Minister, Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia as his running mate pulled 1,236 votes. Ewura Karim Adam’s running mate was Nana Akua Busia.
Sylvester Amoako and Clement Bofa-Oppong also garnered 1,834 and 2,174 votes respectively.
With the failure of neither of the presidential candidates to obtain the 50% plus 1 vote required by the Constitution, the election heads to a run-off election which would involve the first and second placed candidates; Mr. Sylvester Amoako and Clement Bofa-Oppong.
The date for the second round will be communicated later, however, according to the Constitution of the SRC, run-offs are to be held within 7 days after declaration of provisional results
