The Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Mustapha Ussif has announced that the newly introduced NSS insurance policy will be made optional if only the NASPA Congress decides to make it so.
He said that since the package is a binding decision from the National Service Personnel Association(NASPA) Congress, the scheme can only make it optional if the same Congress amends its decision.
“If NASPA Congress resolves to make it optional, who am I to say they should make it compulsory….I don’t have any interest whatsoever, I am only a facilitator working to ensure the welfare of all service personnel”, he explained.
Meanwhile, scores of national service personnel on Thursday began moves to prevent executives of NASPA from deducting an amount of GHc15 from their allowance as a premium for the NSS insurance scheme.
The petition dubbed: “Say no to compulsory Insurance policy,” is to be signed by all service personnel who are against the compulsory insurance premium deduction.
The goal of the petition which was to get about 1,000 signatures of National Service Personnel as at 16: 27 hours on Thursday, received 1,059 signatures against the insurance policy.
The petition which is being coordinated by Angle Three Associates, a social advocacy group would be sent to the Executive NSS director, Mustapha Ussif.
NASPA announced their decision to deduct an amount of GH¢ 15.00 every month from the allowance paid to service persons in the country to aid as an insurance scheme in case of any disaster.
However, most service personnel have received the message with much indifference describing the move as “daylight robbery”, a scheme to rob them of their scanty allowance.
