A statement signed by the current national president of the National Union of Ghana Students Mr. Paa- Quecy Adu asked the general public to disregard anyone parading him or herself as the National president of NUGS since they are yet to elect national executives from the 50th National delegates Congress current ongoing in Hohoe.
According to the statement, the venue constitutional approved for the 50th delegates congress is Hohoe in the Volta region and the National executives will be elected to climax the congress which is so far progressing perfectly on the 9th of October 2016.
BELOW IS THE FULL STATEMENT FROM NUGS
WE ARE YET TO ELECT NATIONAL OFFICERS FOR THE 2016/17 ACADEMIC YEAR– NUGS SETS THE RECORDS STRAIGHT WITH A CALL ON ALL STAKEHOLDERS TO DISREGARD “THE IMPOSTERS”
……………………………………………………
The attention of the leadership of the National Union of Ghana Student (NUGS) has been drawn to a statement making rounds in the media purportedly issued by the Union, communicating Executives Elect for the next academic year. We are again informed that these so called Executives Elect have since been moving from one media house to another parading themselves as National Officers NUGS.
The Union wishes to use this opportunity to state on record that it has NOT issued such statement nor has it authorized anybody to do that on its behalf. As a matter of fact, as you can all testify, we are addressing you here at the St. Francis College of Education, Hohoe which is the venue for the 2016 congress and for that matter the 50th NUGS Congress.
It is therefore absolutely ridiculous that whiles we are at congress ground, which shall of course be climaxed with the elections of new national officers, some folks are already in town claiming to be the elected executives of an election that is yet to be organized. How ridiculous! Ordinarily, we ought not to dignify this mischief with any response because it is very funny and one that is not deserving of any attention, but we are mindful of the possible damage that this union-wrecking campaign may do to the good name of our beloved Union. This is what has compelled us to come out with to SET THE RECORDS STRAIGHT in order to protect the sanctity of our Union.
To start with, we wish to once again place on record that, the Central Committee of the Union, which is the second highest decision making body of the Union, aside Congress per Article 25 of the NUGS Constitution, at its last meeting at the Zenith University on 31st August, 2016 approved St. Francis College of Education, upon NEC recommendation, as the venue for the 2016 NUGS Congress.
Indeed, it is in pursuance of this, that today, we are all gathered here to observe congress. Ladies and gentlemen, congress started on Thursday, 6th October, 2016 and is expected to end on October 9, by which time, we would have elected new executives to assume the mantle of leadership of NUGS for the next academic year.
This congress, which is anchored on the theme, “Building A Modernized Society With The Influence Of Quality Education; Challenges, Lessons And Prospects For The Ghanaian Policy Maker; NUGS In Perspective”, would go in history as one of the most successful congresses the Union has chalked in recent past, having received overwhelming patronage by student leaders across the country, especially SRC and Local NUGS executives of the various pre-tertiary and tertiary institutions in the country. There hasn’t been any issues so far and we are confident that we shall not record any issue as we gear up for elections of national officers, which is the last event of Congress.
It is instructive to make the point that, per our constitutional provisions, it is at congress that Vetting Committee’s report is taken. Again, the Steering Committee as well as the Electoral Commission are formed at congress in pursuance to Article 17 and Article 51 respectively. All these constitutional requirements, as you can all attest to, were met at this congress. And so, there couldn’t have been any other NUGS congress organized elsewhere.
We wish to conclude by expressing our outrage and disappointment at the conduct of some media houses, who regrettably, threw away the ethics of their profession and provided their platforms to a bunch of union-wreckers, who claimed to have organized a certain congress and appointed themselves as national officers of a certain NUGS.
The conduct of these otherwise fine media houses is not only reprehensibly unprofessional and also disappointing. NUGS therefore wishes to call on them to do the honourable thing in order to redeem their reputation before the good students of Ghana and the public at large.
NUGS is NOT and CANNOT be divided. Our detractors can continue to tickle themselves and laugh but we can assure you that the rank and file of the Union is solidly behind us; as we continue to champion their affairs. The students of Ghana have had enough of their excesses. To this effect, congress has observed that, by their conduct, these union-wreckers have taken themselves out of the Union and have no business with anything that has to do with NUGS.
We are therefore calling on the media and the general public NOT to entertain them. Again, we are sending a stern warning to the imposter of a certain self acclaimed NUGS President, Abubakari Luqman and his shameless self-acclaimed executives to stay away of the Union’s affairs, else we shall refer them to the appropriate law enforcement agencies to deal with them accordingly.
Thank you.
…SIGNED…
PAA-QUECY ADU
President, NUGS
